Making Money Together as a Family

My daughter sent me a link to a clip from the Ellen show. It was an interview with a 14-year-old girl who had purchased a home. Turns out the girl was obtaining free, or nearly free items and selling them on Craigslist for a profit. She earned $6,000 doing this. Afterward, she saw a house for sale and was able to buy it for $12,000. Her mother had gone in with her, and I’m sure her whole family helped to fix up the house after it was purchased.
This reminded of me of the time my ex-husband first left. The girls and I would go out each morning in search of treasures that people were throwing away. We would bring them home and clean them up. Then we would have a yard sale and sell everything. This gave us enough money to pay our bills and survive until other forms of income were set in place.
I like the idea that a family can make money together. In fact, now that my girls are older, we have a few projects going that will earn us money in the long run. My desire is to get my mortgage paid off early, and my 12-year-old wants enough money to purchase and care for her very own horse. She has been riding for a long time.
Of course, if you don’t have any goals for the extra money, you could create a family vacation savings account. Any money you earn together could go in there. Vacations are a great way to create lasting memories with your loved ones, and you’ll appreciate it even more when every family member has contributed to paying for it.
